Following the Scriptures, Rather Than the Traditions

Our Facebook clip today features Keith Johnson as he speaks with GNFI Board member Rich Pogin as they break down the difference between Rabbinic and Biblical Judaism. Tradition can be one of those issues that steers people in the wrong direction, and all religions have traditions that may not be holding exactly to the truth of the scriptures. In fact some traditions will say that they are equal to the truth found in the scriptures, making their practice, or their theological bent the right way to believe. Rabbi's for centuries have commented on the scriptures giving us the Talmud, and many other commentaries that give prescriptions on how to interpret the scriptures. Many denominations do the same, they have theological lens that everything is filtered through so that the conclusion can be measured by their stream of thought.
Now, not all tradition is bad, you have to sensitive to what is being said, asking the question, "what is the foundation of this tradition?"
Thisis one of the reasons why Good News for Israel exists, to remind the Church of it's Hebraic foundation. It is within this context that God has revealed His Savior. Context is very important to interpreting scripture, and it is within that context you will find the authors intent. Keith Johnson's co-author Nehemia Gordon for example is a Karaite Jew, who only studies the scripture, without the influence of the commentaries of the Rabbi's or the traditions of Judaism to influence them.
The Hebraic root theology is a contextual understanding of scripture that places Israel in the middle of God's plan to bring His Messiah and Savior to the world. God has not replaced Israel, but has expanded on His idea that His people are the lights in our world. Good News for Israel will be hosting a fall conference October 13-15, 2011 in Bloomington MN to present to the Church the importance of context and scripture. Keith Johnson will be one of our featured speakers. We will be revealing more information about this conference shortly on our website: gnfi.org
