An Ancient Contagion Thrives, By Suzanne Fields
Stereotypes have their grim uses. Stereotypes galvanize hostility by dehumanizing a person or group, with no appeal to thinking. At best, in the hands of political cartoonists and satirists, stereotypes illuminate political and cultural observation with wit and insight. At worst, stereotypes appeal to man's capacity to hate, to direct terror against the innocent. |
Anti-Anti-Semitism Day This Tuesday, Jan 23, '04
"History has taught us that anti-Semitism starts with the Jews, but doesn't end with them." So said Natan Sharansky, Israel's Minister for Jerusalem and Diaspora Affairs, in announcing that the government has designated Tuesday, January 27, as a "National Day to Combat Anti-Semitism."

ANTI-SEMITISM: A Vital Key to Understanding Spiritual Delusion, By Christopher J. Patton |
Contemporary Right Wing Anti-Semitism, By Richard Cravatts
"Anti-Semitism," wrote Stephen Eric Bronner, author of the engaging book A Rumor About The Jews, "is the stupid answer to a serious question: How does history operate behind our backs?" For a wide range of ideological extremists, anti-Semitism is still the stupid answer for why what goes wrong with the world, does go wrong. It is a philosophical world view and interpretation of history that creates conspiracies as a way of explaining the unfolding of historical events; it is a pessimistic and frantic outlook, characterized by historian Richard Hofstadter as "the paranoid style" of politics, which shifts responsibility from the self to sinister, omnipotent others-typically and historically the Jews.
[Just as Satan uses the sins in our own lives to discredit our witness for Christ, so he takes the sins of the naturally human Jewish people to discredit the name of Israel and Zion in order to attack the One true God of Israel. (Romans 2:17-24) Read the logic expressed by several folks quoted in this article, and see it as the handwriting on the wall. America is turning against Zionism, Israel, and the Jewish people in that order and without reversal possible because God will use anti-Semitism to fulfill His promise of bringing all of the sons of Israel back to their Promised Land. American Jews will not leave unless persecuted, and they will be - unjustly so. -cjp] |

Anti-Semitism in Great Britain, Jan 26, 2004
A survey showing increasing anti-Jewish sentiment in Great Britain shows that 18% of Britons harbor anti-Semitic attitudes, and that fully one in seven Britons believe the scale of the Holocaust has been exaggerated. |
Background: Does Israel have the right to exist? Do Jews?
By Bradley Burston, Haaretz Correspondent
As evidence of anti-Semitic sentiment mounts across Europe, Israelis have begun asking if foreign criticism of their government's policies has crossed a line of no return into virulent Jew-hate and serious debate over the very right of the Jewish state to continue to exist. |
Becoming Rational About Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ"
By Christopher J. Patton
Many in the Jewish community are legitimately concerned about the possible social consequences that might be inspired by Mel Gibson's new movie, The Passion of the Christ. History is on their side. In fact Christians would do well to reflect a little on the history of religious warfare and persecution between themselves over issues of passionate faith. A little mutual understanding might go a long way on this topic. |
The Cancer of Anti-Semitism in Europe, By Jeff Jacoby
According to a poll conducted by the European Union last fall, 59 percent of EU citizens identify Israel as the world's greatest threat to peace - ahead of Iran, Iraq, and North Korea. In December, millions of Europeans with satellite TV reception were able to watch "Al-Shatat," a Syrian film that portrayed Jews as blood-drinking monsters who conspire to rule the world.
In a leading Greek newspaper, a journalist wrote that the Jews "have vindicated the persecutions of the Nazis. . . . They deserved such an executioner [as Hitler] since they proved to be murderers themselves." At a televised reception to mark the publication of his memoirs, Mikis Theodorakis, the composer of "Zorba the Greek," denounced Jews. "These little people are the root of evil," he told an audience that included two cabinet members - neither of whom reacted to his antisemitic outburst.
What the world should already know but so often forgets is that Jews are the canary in the coal mine of civilization. Antisemitism is like cancer; unchecked, it can metastasize and sicken the entire body. When civilized nations fail to rise up against the Jew-haters in their midst, it is often just a matter of time before the Jew-haters in their midst rise up against them. |
Did Hitlerism die with Hitler?
By Omer Bartov
So Hitler is dead, but there is a Hitlerite quality to the new anti-Semitism, which now legitimizes not only opposition to Zionism but also the resurrection of the myth of Jewish world domination. And those who foolishly think that doing away with Israel, not least in a "one-state solution," would remove anti-Semitism had better look more closely at the language of these enemies. For they--I mean the enemies--insist that the Jews are everywhere, and so they must be uprooted everywhere. Their outpost may be Israel, but their "power center" is in America, and their synagogues and intellectuals are in Germany and France, and their academics are in Russia and Britain. Since they are the cause of all evil and misfortune, the world will be a happier place without them, whether it is dominated by the Aryan Master Race or by the ideological soldiers of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Do Jews Have a Future in Europe? By Daniel Pipes
Unless Europeans find the strength forthrightly to address this problem - and all indicators suggest that is unlikely - there is reason to expect a general Jewish exodus from Europe, perhaps along the lines of the general Jewish exodus from Muslim countries a half century ago. |
Europe Ought to be Ashamed, By Joseph Farah |
EU Parliament Member: Intifada is European Proxy War Against America, Dec 23, '03
"The Europeans," explained MP Schroeder, "supported the Palestinian Authority with the aim of becoming its main sponsor, and through this challenge the U.S. and present themselves as the future global power.
"The primary goal of the EU is the internationalization of the conflict in order to underline the need for its own mediating role," she argues, warning that renewed European calls for a multinational force in the region - heard most recently by the head of the largest political bloc in the parliament - combined with heightened levels of anti-Semitism in Europe and the Arab world, could spell disaster for Jews everywhere. "The Palestinians are playing the ugly role of being the cannon fodder for Europe's hidden war against the U.S.," she adds.
"There is no difference in the consciousness of an average member of the European Parliament and an average German peace demonstrator, and I consider this to be a mixture of naivete, moralism, anti-Americanism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Zionism and an altogether serious danger," she said during her U.S. speaking tour. |
EU Sees anti-Semitism on Rise, 31 March, 2004
STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) - Attacks on Jews have increased in several European Union states, especially in France, with the main perpetrators young, white males, an EU report says.
"There has been an increase in anti-Semitic incidents in five EU countries," the EUMC said, citing Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Britain and Germany. "Although it is not easy to generalise, the largest group of perpetrators...appears to be young, disaffected white Europeans."
"A further source of anti-Semitism in some countries was young Muslims of North African or Asian extraction. Traditionally anti-Semitic groups on the extreme right played a part in stirring opinion," it said.

Ex-CIA director says Europe's elite drawing '1st breath of totalitarianism'
Woolsey: Hatred of Jews threatening rule of law
© 2003 WorldNetDaily.com, November 28, 2003,
According to the National Post, Woolsey said Jews are history's great champions of the rule of law, so much so that they have come to embody it. He said anti-Semitism threatens the rule of law and intolerance of Jews is a first step toward dictatorial rule - a hallmark of the world's most oppressive societies.
"Once anti-Semitism raises its head, the rest of us who don't want to live with a foot on the back of our necks are likely to be the next targets," Woolsey said.

Graffiti on History's Walls, By Mortimer B. Zuckerman
All the isms," an English wag once said, "are wasms." Well, not quite. In the 20th century, fascism came and went. Communism came and went. Socialism came and waned. But today several virulent "isms" inhabit the world still. Among the most pernicious are an atavistic anti-Semitism and its 20th-century version, anti-Zionism. These "isms" are graffiti on the wall of history, emblems of a poison still potent and raw, evidenced, most recently, by the remarks of Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who said, "Today the Jews rule this world by proxy. They get others to fight and die for them."

Interesting Times: The Difference, By SAUL SINGER, The Jerusalem Post 3/4/2004
I am happy for the millions who, like Novak, will have their faith strengthened by this film. Christianity provides a powerful religious model that has attracted two billion adherents. It engenders a fear of God that is much preferable to common alternatives such as atheism, nihilism, and paganism. Recently, moreover, the more relevant threats to Jews have come not from the medieval Christianity Gibson seems to favor, but from Nazism, communism, and radical Islam, against which believing Christians are staunch Jewish allies.
But the Christian model is not for everyone. Jews believe that everyone is born with both a good and an evil inclination, that we must struggle to reinforce our good side, and that we can atone for sins through prayer and correcting what we've done. Though faith and actions are important to both religions, Christianity is more faith-centered and Judaism more action-centered. We believe that God judges us more on what we do to bring a better world than on what we believe. |
A Jew Defends the Cross, Dennis Prager Novemeber 16, 2004
About 2,000 people showed up on a workday morning, many of them non-Christians, including atheists, Buddhists, and a fair number of Jews, including non-Orthodox Jews and Orthodox Jews wearing yarmulkes. It was probably the first time in history that Jews have banded to protect the Christian cross. It is an achievement of which the ACLU should be proud. |
Jewish Response To "The Passion"
"What I'm concerned about is that Jews who see this film will identify deeply with Jesus - the movie's heroic 'good guy' - and will dis-identify with their own G-d-given identity as the Jewish people."
Rabbi Weinreb contrasts the differing paths to redemption in Christianity and Judaism: "In Christianity redemption is by faith; in Judaism it comes via actions, namely, the fulfillment of G-d's commandments. In Judaism, grace does not come from without, rather from within... The special role of the Jewish people, through fulfillment of the commandments, is to bring the universe closer to a God Who commands us to distinguish good from evil." He notes the teachings of the Rambam (Maimonides) that the role of Christianity is to disseminate, throughout the non-Jewish world, Jewish concepts such as prayer, repentance and family values. |
Jews and Anti-Jews, By Ruth Wisse |
The Left's Anti-Semitic Chic, By George Will
It used to be said that anti-Catholicism was the anti-Semitism of the intellectuals. Today anti-Semitism is the anti-Semitism of the intellectuals. Not all intellectuals, of course. And the seepage of this ancient poison into the intelligentsia - always so militantly modern - is much more pronounced in Europe than here. But as anti-Semitism migrates across the political spectrum from right to left, it infects the intelligentsia, which has leaned left for two centuries. |

The Myth of the Myth of the Holocaust, By Sam Schulman |
The New Anti-Semitism, By Miriam Greenspan
The crucial contribution of Chesler's book is her detailed presentation of the confluence of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism-the complex hybrid of bigotry that is emerging today. "The anti-racist anti-Zionist," says Chesler, "has a lot in common with the old-fashioned racist anti-Semite."
Israel has become "the Jew of the world-scorned, scapegoated, demonized, and attacked." The core of her argument is that Jew-hatred, Holocaust denial, and violence against Jews in the Arab and Muslim nations, as well as in Europe, Asia, and the United States, are "symbiotically" nourished by a dogmatic form of anti-Zionism promulgated by students, intellectuals, academics, and progressives. The Palestinian Intifada is suffused with this new anti-Semitism and its supporters around the world are infected with it. In short, the new anti-Semitism is "the last acceptable prejudice" on both the Left and the Right.
An excellent commentary and book review from someone
with a history of "leftist" political activism.

Not Your Grandfather's Anti-Semitism, by Tony Judt, The Nation, January 3, 2005.
"Anti-Semitism" today is a genuine problem. It is also an illusory problem. The distinction between the two is one of those contemporary issues that most divide Europe from the United States. The overwhelming majority of Europeans abhors recent attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions and takes them very seriously.
The one thing on which European and American commentators can agree is that there is a link between hostility to Jews and events in the Middle East. But they draw diametrically opposed conclusions as to the meaning of this link.
But whereas most Europeans believe that the problem originates in the Middle East and must therefore be addressed there, the ADL and many American commentators conclude rather that there is no longer any difference between being "against" Israel and "against" Jews: i.e., that in Europe anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism have become synonymous. But that is palpably false.

Ominous Sign: Israel and Jews Being Blamed for Iraq War Plans, By Bill Koenig |
The Omission of the Christ, By Aaron J. Shuster
Most importantly, I was shocked that Mel Gibson had Jews in a movie set in a period two thousand years ago. Why, for at least one hundred years, the Arabs and Moslems have been telling the world that the Jews don't come from Israel and have never lived there. They have been telling everyone who will listen that the so-called "Palestinians", or Arab inhabitants of the Land of Israel, are the genuine inhabitants of Israel and that the Jews are nothing more than foreign invaders, or as they like to call them, "colonialists."

The Palestinians' Genocide Campaign, By Alan Dershowitz April 18, 2004
Recently, a young student at the Hebrew University was gunned down while jogging through a mixed neighborhood of Jews and Arabs in north Jerusalem. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, joyously claimed credit for the killing yet another innocent Jew.
When it was later learned that the jogger was a Jerusalem Arab and not a Jew, al-Aqsa quickly apologized to the family, calling it an accident. But the killing of the innocent young jogger was not an accident; the murderer had deliberately taken aim at his head and midsection, intending to end his life. The only thing accidental about the murder was the religion of the victim. Al-Aqsa had sent the assassin to murder a Jew - any Jew, so long as he was a Jew.
This is racism, pure and simple. And despite efforts by supporters of Palestinian terrorism to justify the murder of innocent civilians as national liberation or by any other euphemism, this case proves that the Palestinian terrorists' targeting of Jews and only Jews - as many as possible - is little different in intent from other forms of lethal or exterminatory anti-Jewish murders. (I don't use the term anti-Semitic only because some Arabs claim that because they too are Semites, they can't be anti-Semitic.) |

THE RAINBOW SWASTIKA
A REPORT TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE ABOUT NEW AGE ANTISEMITISM, By Hannah Newman
This phenomenon has triggered a "paradigm shift" that is pregnant with a brand of antisemitism both new and frighteningly familiar. It has carried its seeds throughout our global environment to the point where you will be tempted to disbelieve what you are reading. That's fine -- be skeptical; check it out for yourself. Everything is documented.
The most shocking thing is that this warning has been sounding since 1980. Why haven't the Jews heard about it before? Because the warning was coming from Christians, and we Jews don't pay attention to anything that might contain a possible proselytizing message. So we've missed it.
[The links listed in her online book will take you behind the scenes of a worldwide phenomenon which is familiar to all, but is seldom recognized for what it is -- and certainly not among the Jewish people. -cjp] |

The peace movement of the 1930s made the Holocaust inevitable --- by accident; The peace movement of Today wants no more accidents: Just the death of Jews, By Sam Schulman
Our grandparents' anti-war allies enabled the Holocaust --- by accident. Your present day anti-war allies wish quite deliberately to destroy "Jewish interests" --- and the lives of many, many Jews in the process. And this is not an unintentional byproduct of good intentions --- but for many leaders of the peace movement, a precious goal. |

A Tale of Two Realities, by Jack Kinsella
Dateline: May 14, 1948. The British Mandate ended, and the Arabs voted, much to Jewish delight, not to accept the UN Partition Plan. The Jews had one of two choices. Declare statehood and hope for recognition, or be annihilated by the surrounding Arabs as soon as the last British soldier pulled out. The US was among those most opposed to the creation of a Jewish State. The UN was in shambles. British, US, Arab and UN intentions remained undeclared.
When David Ben-Gurion sent a cable to Truman asking him to recognize the Jewish State, it was still unnamed. After considerable debate, "Zion" and "Judea" were rejected in favor of the last minute compromise, "Israel" [Personal Witness, Abba Eban, Putnam Books, 1992].
Then there is the other reality.
In 2002, Palestinian statehood was introduced by the United States with complete Cabinet approval. It involves land that was held by Jordan and Egypt until 1967 -- when those countries lost that territory when they lost the Six Days War.
Neither Jordan nor Egypt felt it necessary to extend statehood to the West Bank or Gaza when they were the 'occupiers'. Israel encouraged the establishment of a Palestinian state at the Security Council meeting.
But the violence continues. The Arab states say the UN resolution didn't go far enough. The Islamic terrorists say nothing will be enough until Palestine includes what is today Israel.
The Palestinians aren't depicted as 'racist', although until the Jews captured the land in 1967, there was no call from the 'Palestinians' for 'statehood' and no 'Palestinian' people. Why? Because they were Egyptians or Jordanians, and therefore under Arab rule. Which are the 'racists'? |

That Old Standby - the Scapegoat, by Jonathan Tobin
Not long ago, I was talking about reporting news on Israel with a young journalist who works for a major metropolitan daily newspaper.
When it was pointed out that the Jewish press had an obligation to fill the gap in unbiased information and perspective on the Middle East, this man piped up, saying that was all well and good, but were Jewish journalists telling the truth about Israel being the reason America was a terror target? |
Treatment of Israel Strikes an Alien Note, By Alan M. Dershowitz
If a visitor from a far away galaxy were to land at an American or Canadian university and peruse some of the petitions that were circulating around the campus, he would probably come away with the conclusion that the Earth is a peaceful and fair planet with only one villainous nation determined to destroy the peace and to violate human rights. That nation would not be Iraq, Libya, Serbia, Russia or Iran. It would be Israel. |

The Untold Truth About The Passion,
By Rabbi Ben Tzion Krasnianski, Mar 18, '04
This is the true reason for anti-Semitism. The Jew, even the atheist Jew, is a witness to the presence of a living, moral G-d in the universe. A Jew walking down Park Avenue is a breathing miracle. All miracles in the Bible, pale in comparison to the miracle of Jewish survival. A Jew, who has survived destructions, exiles, pogroms, inquisitions, Holocausts, and endless wars, is the greatest living proof that there is a G-d in this world; that history is a moral narrative. The Jew, by his or her very existence, reminds six billion people that this world is not a jungle, and that we are all going to have to answer for ourselves and for our actions, after our proverbial sojourn here on earth. |

WE SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID, WE SHOULD ACT...The Jewish Observor, September 2004
Are there any manifestations of xenophobia and anti-Semitism in Ukraine? Today, a PhD in political science Alexander Naiman shares his opinion on this problem.
- I think that over the last year the problem of anti-Semitism in Ukraine has become acute. If in 2002 there were 149 anti-Semitic publications in different editions, then in 2003 their number became 258. Circulations of the editions publishing such materials also grew up. "Silski Visti" alone has the circulation of 500 thousand copies. Under the articles of the kind signatures of people with professor and academic titles have appeared, at times - the names of rather high-ranking officials. Tens of anti-Semitic books "stroll" today about Ukraine. |
What type of world will my children live in? By Jeff Dunetz
Like a lot of parents I often go into my children's room to watch them sleep. These days when I look at my kids sleeping in their beds, looking so innocent, I worry that across the world innocent Jewish children are being de-humanized. How the radicals who control Islam are teaching their children to kill my children. I think about the European and American press portraying Jews using old horrible stereotypes. I see anti-Semitism growing on US Campuses. And just like 70 years ago I see much of the world refusing to acknowledge the scope of the problem or act to prevent it. |
